Some thoughts from Gaby…

“Since the age of 10 I’ve loved cycling. From barely being able to ride a bike when I first joined Halesowen Cycling Club, I have now competed internationally and won a few national titles!

Whilst I love competing, cycling has had so many positive impacts on my life. The first perk that springs to mind is the friendships that I have made.

I particularly remember one of my now closest friends, Jamieson Blain, teaching me how to use cleats, grabbing burgers after Friday Night Track League and playing pool in the club house post training. I especially remember how excited I would be for GoRide days to ride/race my bike, followed by our McDonalds lunch and afternoon water fights. Having fun, whether this be going off play in the park at Tudor Grange or hitting the café at Baggeridge Country Park was always as important as racing my bike.

For myself, the biggest inspiration to compete at a high level in cycling was the 2012 London Olympics. I remember meeting in the Halesowen club house to watch former member Jess Varnish compete in the team sprint with Victoria Pendleton.

I would love to be able to inspire the next generation, so supporting this race is a huge honour to me! I also believe now is a great time to be doing this, especially with the Paris Olympics happening this Summer.

Since my Junior years, I converted my Nationality to Irish, along with Ben Healy who I grew up with at Halesowen Cycling Club and who I’m sure is now a household name!

I have represented Ireland on multiple occasions at Junior World and U23 European Championships on the Track with my best result being 4th in the Madison! On my journey, I have also won 5 National titles on the Track.

But something I have never stopped having is FUN.”
